I guess I am struggling to understand where I gitclone the repo to within my site

I don’t think it’s something you add to your site. You download it, then run the go command while you are in your repo. The code then takes the images and builds a structure. It does not look like it’s supposed to be run every time you build your site. Just once per gallery.
