For example: https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/hugo
At the moment I post this question, the latest version of Hugo is 0.58.2
and on Ubuntu is 0.40
. This makes me wonder is there any reason behind this or 0.58
is a beta version?
That’s to do with the Ubuntu release cycle.
Your best option is to manually install the lastest .deb from the releases on github
BTW - even the current development version of Ubuntu is only up to Hugo 0.57.2 https://packages.ubuntu.com/eoan/hugo
Well, it’s 2021 and I have Hugo 0.81 and bionic is still on 0.40.1, so… whatever the reason is, using apt for hugo is completely useless.
You’re absolutely correct that the best way is to install manually, but…
I’m positive we came up with automated updates for a reason. It’s almost like we wanted computers to work for us instead of the other way around. That is in fact the whole point of static site generators like Hugo.
