Theme "Academic": Custom JS files are not copied

I placed the custom js under assets/js folder, and followed the instructions at https://sourcethemes.com/academic/docs/customization/#add-scripts-js , but the JS files are not copied to /public/js folder at all.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
