List content page

Hi - I am confused about how to use the content list template. I want to have a list page for each section which displays the archives of all posts in that section.

I see from here http://gohugo.io/templates/list/ how to create a template, but I do not understand how to use the template to generate a viewable list/archive page. In my case only the list page in each section would use this template.

ah, I think I have it. I was trying to say it as contentname.html in the /layouts/contentname folder, but that was not working. If I use the _default folder instead, it seems to display.
