Can 404 page layout be put inside _default folder? (I tried but it didn’t work). Or it always have to be at in the root of layouts folder?
It must be in the root of your layouts directory. I just clarified the documentation.

Anyways, I went over the layouts lookup order again yesterday and I was trying to declutter the root of the layouts folder by moving/renaming files to the _default folder, and to make finding files in VS Code easier. I guess the 404 can remain in the root of layouts as it should.
