Do Exif functions only work on TIFF and JPG still?

The docs Here say that

1. EXIF data is stripped from any image when it is processed by Hugo
2. EXIF data can only be read/written with JPG or TIFF files

I imagine 1. is still true. Is 2 still true? Can exif or meta data not be added or read (mainly added) to PNG or WEBP formats?

EXIF data is read-only, and can only be extracted from JPEG and TIFF images.
