Xml pubdates changed to `01 Jan 0001` when moving from 0.124.1 to 0.126.0

Hello Hugo Community —

I recently updated from Hugo 1.24.1 to 0.126.0 and then 0.128.0. Rebuilding our website after either of the updates, I’m seeing some diffs in the index.xml files for our authors, tags, and series directories in which the pubdates have reset to 01 Jan 0001. This seems like it could be innocuous, but I’m unsure, so wanted to ask:

  • What role do the pubdates in these files play? Does it matter if they’re set to this bogus date?
  • Is there a best practice to have current dates in those files? I think that, at present, we’re only manually maintaining dates in the posts themselves (which seemed unaffected by the upgrade), not in any of the author/tags/series files.
  • Is it clear/expected why upgrading between those versions would have caused this change?

Thanks for any tips or reassurance here. And thanks also for hugo, which has been a great tool for us!
