What is the some best practices when customize theme for own use?

From Themes | Hugo Themes, we found a theme with MIT license.
Is Hugo modules the right way to go if we are just adding some custom CSS to create a head bar, different font, live chat?
Is there something like child theme in Huge, where we can just export the customized part and keep using the original theme?

If you want to receive future theme updates, then this is the recommended way.

No. The way to go about it is to copy the files in the theme that you want to edit in the same path in the base layouts folder. For example, copy themes/theme-name/layouts/_default/single.html to layouts/_default/single.html. The same applies to assets and other files.
