Markdown to HTML problem

Using Hugo for the first time, followed your directions here in Hugo v0.120.3.
The bold and emphasis markup appears in my “my-first-post.md” but not in the resulting html page. Any idea what I may be missing?

The page itself is rendered to the correct HTML. What you are looking at is the summary of the page, displayed on the homepage. How the summary is rendered depends on how you define the summary.
