Legal issues on reproducing other themes?

Hello everyone,

I don’t know if I’m in the right category, sorry if I’m not.

I’m writing a Hugo theme inspired by the design of an existing website. I have seen some Hugo themes inspired by other websites. So I ask my question here:

Do you know anything about the legal issues of using the design of other sites to create a new theme that is distributed under a free or open source licence?

I’m talking about reproduction from scratch, not copy/paste sources.

There is no general answer to this. Every website has a copyright. Every copyright is different. If they don’t explicitly name how they license their design you can assume that it’s restrictive.

Some people explicitly state that their theme is under a MIT license. Then it’s very clear how you can use their work.
