Sorry for old thread question, but this is really very useful. I prefer the @zwbetz third method for its simplicity. “download of the theme git repo then unzipped into the appropriate place”. Should it be possible to install any theme like that? There are many themes that suggest installing via git submodule add and I am really not interested in learning and then forgetting about git submodules. I am rather interested in simply downloading what I need in themes directory.
The one method that will always work is manually download a theme and place it in themes/ dir.
I always install themes as a module, the most convenient method for me.
