Is there a flag to render emoji as Unicode instead of HTML escapes? It looks like most of the 3,309-line diff for my site between 0.119.0 and 0.120.1 are emoji-related, but not all.
No, there is not.
Pity; guess I’ll have to accept the 3,309-line diff and hope you don’t change your minds again.
By the way, the new method doesn’t support the exact same set of emoji substitutions. In 0.119.0, fingers_crossed worked, but now only crossed_fingers works; I have no idea if that’s the only one that broke.
This is the first we changed anything related to emojis (to my recollection), and this has nothing with changing anyones mind: The old feature was broken and was impossible to fix without spending thousands of hours.
I’m sure you didn’t expect it to be a breaking change, but it was. Minor, compared to some of the past ones that didn’t make it into the release notes, but it still changed sites in unexpected ways (missing conversions, different auto-generated ID tags, and maybe more).
