With jmoorings great hvm this step can easily integrated into your automation.

You’re right! I forgot about that. I adopted hvm, and now I can just hvm use latest && git add .hvm && ./review_staged_changes.sh. The selected Hugo version is now version-controlled, and my script can stash it just like any other change. Cool
