Default language at the site root without redirect to subfolder

Hi Everyone,
I am following the multilingual features. I currently have the site at:
/en/* in English, and /pl/* in Polish. I would like to keep the directory structure using languages / translations feature, but keep the default English language homepage at the site root url.
I suppose that Hugo is generating urls taking into account language usbfolders, so the target urls will be valid in the generated homepage index.html file.
Can I do anything to keep the default language at the root, but have the content generated in a subfolder: /en/*…

I am writing to get comments after bringing this topic to light with BEP, who implemented the multilingual features. Currently, Hugo is making a redirect to the default subfolder for the default language from the site root.

To the best of my knowledge, this is currently not possible.
