Can't limit posts on list such as homepage

I’m trying to use the following to limit the number of posts on the homepage that show up as previews but can’t seem to get it down from 10. I’m trying 5 with the following code exactly as stated, but no dice.

It’s really difficult to say without seeing the context of your code. It should work as per the example in the docs.

Wild guessing w/o seeing code, put this in your config.toml?

 paginate = 5
