Changed it to rus and it fixed the problem! Unlike OP, I had used just one ru translation code. Came here to post about this problem and found a solution right away. Thanks a lot!

Updated Hugo to the latest 0.54 version, then chenged rus back to ru and it works just fine now. Now my site is fully compliant with international language code standards
