Shortcode inside shortcode

In the code of one shortocde, I want to check if a front matter variable exists and if it does then I want to display another shortcode. When I do this I get an error:
unexpected "<" in command

I guess this is not possible?

I saw some stuff about nested shortcodes, but that looked to be about nesting them in the content file, I am trying to get one shortcode to call another shortcode.

Put yer template online so we can see it. Maybe there is something else going on, but that would make it easy for someone to help.
