LaTeX align environment not working

Greetings,

I’m trying to add something like

\begin{align}
    \begin{aligned}
        2x+3 &= 7 & 2x+3-3 &= 7-3 \\
        2x &= 4 & \frac{2x}2 &= \frac42\\
        x &= 2
    \end{aligned}
\end{align}

to my content page which should result in aligned equations (one on top of the other, essentially)

But I keep getting this

Not sure what is causing the formatting to get lost. I’m using the default MathJax.js that comes with hugo’s academic theme.
