Google Search Console has trouble reading the sitemap

Greetings,

I’ve got an issue with the Google Search Console - I want to pass the sitemap.xml file to it, however while Google can find the file, it says it’s format is not supported. I checked the sitemap guidelines, but I could not find anything wrong with mine (which is automatically generated by Hugo).

I tested both the link above with and without the slash at the end - and both return 200 when I test the URLs, but sadly neither work. …sitemap.xml/ could not be read, and …sitemap.xml returns a not supported file format error. I can open the sitemap for both links from the console however. And my website works correctly. It seems as if I’m not the only one with the issue, but I could not find a fix - I’m using the Paper Mod

Any ideas what I could do?

I have some news, I have also tested my website with Bing Webmaster Tools (with the main intent of my website also being findable on DuckDuckGo, which is my mainly driver) and wouldn’t you know it the link I provided above for my sitemap works on Bing.

This makes me really confused, what did I do wrong in the Google Search Console?

I’ve got good news, the sitemap of my webpage is now working, it seems like Google Search Engine has a bug where the first read of the sitemap is somehow faulty, but after a week or two the sitemap is read correctly
