Forcing .html extension for google verification file

Hi - new to Hugo. I am trying to add a google verification file google###########.html to my site. When I try to access the file google###########.html I receive a 404. But if I try google########### (without the .html) it works. is there a way to force Hugo to append .html to one file?
Thanks and apologize if silly newbie question.

Where and how are you adding it?

Put it in static as an HTML file. It’s not something that needs to be created every time you run GoHugo.

Thank you. I added it as googlexxxx.html. but after the site is rendered it looks like the .html is removed

I simply copied the file googlexxxxx.html into the root

Do not place the file in the root of your project.

Do not place the file in the root of your content directory.

As @davidsneighbour clearly described, create a directory named “static” in the root of your project, and place your file in the directory you just created.

Thank you. I will try!

Perfect!! Thank you
