hi, I have a small website building fine in multiple languages GitHub - languages-in-floss/site: A website about localization and internationalization
Since I added Indonesian (lang code is id), I have this error:

If I remove the language id from hugo config file, the build works fine.
I can’t understand what is different with this language compared to others.
Issue looks to be there, but my template understanding doesn’t allow me to get further minimo/layouts/partials/data/author/displayName at 0d0811edef81ae00ba2501dfbc51b79c6635aac3 · languages-in-floss/minimo · GitHub
To reproduce the error:
Clone the repository with submodule
git clone https://github.com/languages-in-floss/site --recurse-submodules
Convert gettext files into markdown file in the content-translated folder:
make-translated-content.sh
run hugo server
hugo server
Any hint?

mmh, looks like you need to install some po4atools.which needs perl and some more?
I’m on windows - would be maybe an option to provide a ready to Hugo repo for us

oh, you are right, I can simplify this indeed, here is a new repository

I tried with versions 140 and 142
Your comment made me try to test with newer versions.
It does crash with a more explicit error message in Hugo 0.145

I tried to migrate to new theme 0.146 and failed.
I feel like there is something broken in the way I search for translated pages.

Sry for not being explicite
These imply
you have a working site
the repo is broken cause of the new id section in the config.yaml (project)
removing the id: section results in successful build
I cloned and build the second link using the command
git clone https://github.com/Jibec/site --recurse-submodules myfolder
cd myfolder
hugo
I was unable to build with 151.2, 128.0, 123.1 with or without id: entry. So I was looking for the hugo version that can build your site. Anything more to setup a working build?
the first error I get is about a timeout when rendering the list pages - looks like we have a deep recursion here
ERROR render of "term" failed: "C:\_repos\github\clone\topic-56112-flossLangID\themes\minimo\layouts\_default\list.html:1:3":
execute of template failed: template: _default/list.html:1:3:
executing "_default/list.html" at <partial "header" .>:
error calling partial: partial "header" timed out after 30s.
This is most likely due to infinite recursion. If this is just a slow template, you can try to increase the 'timeout' config setting.
Total in 31562 ms
some of your i18n files do not have all translations available - compare i18n/id and i18n/fr
your code does not explicitely check for errors, so it might use with bad data deep in your call stack …
Looks like you try to find some author information by recursively analyzing some data files…
p.s. the output of hugo env will help (ofc from a source that builds fine)
and a look at a generated site would be nice

thanks for taking the time to investigate this
website is published there: https://languages-in-floss.eu
the html contains this meta I manually created to know when were the last publication done:
<meta name='generation-date' content='2025-10-20 02:01:07.388790431 +0000 UTC m=+0.583867224'>
the generic meta shows <meta name="generator" content="Hugo 0.140.2">
weird enough, it shows the Indonesian language from configuration were considered Bahasa dan perangkat lunak bebas
but there is no content…
Same error as on my computer:
Oct 20 02:01:08 domain.fr deploy.sh[2195193]: Error: error building site: render: failed to render pages: render of "/home/jb/languages-in-floss/content-translated/id/authors/butterflyoffire/_index.md" failed>
on the server running the script I have:
$ ./hugo env
hugo v0.140.2-aae02ca612a02e085c08366a9c9279f4abb39d94 linux/amd64 BuildDate=2024-12-30T15:01:53Z VendorInfo=gohugoio
GOOS="linux"
GOARCH="amd64"
GOVERSION="go1.23.4"
I took an existing template with i18n support which I simplified to remove unused features (tracking stuff), what is important for me is the ability for users to switch between translations:
I guess it somehow worked by chance in the past? There were no other change than adding Indonersian language in hugo configuration since October 12th.

not yet done, but I found maybe two things:
there’s a translated author name in 2020-06-12-80-percent in language zh_Hant (also the error persists)
but while rendering the .Data.Terms on the /authors page
just thinking out loud: something special with using “id” as a key in some data structures …
authors arrive as:
WARN 6 - AUTHOR: map[email:map[host:holcroft.fr username:jean-baptiste] id:jibec name:map[display:Jean-Baptiste Holcroft] social:map[email:jean-baptiste@holcroft.fr github:jibec mastodon:https://mamot.fr/@jibec]] : map[display:Jean-Baptiste Holcroft] : %!s(MISSING)

"name": {
"display": "Quenti"
},
"social": {
"github": "Quenty-tolosan",
"mastodon": "https://framapiaf.org/@Quenti"
}
}
but I get
WARN 7 - PAGE: /authors : Authors : id
WARN 7 - DATA: map[id:butterflyoffire name:map[display:ButterflyOfFire] social:map[github:BoFFire mastodon:athmane mokraoui [BoF] ⏚ꝃ⌁⁂ (@ButterflyOfFire@mstdn.fr) - mstdn ]] : id : “butterflyoffire”
where the value of the key ‘id’ is a simple string and not a map.
and this results in “can’t evaluate field name in type string” later - seems this is passed unchecked …,

I tried:
to remove all languages from config: build fails.
to remove the translated-content dir: build fails.
to remove part of templates: build fails.
I’m really confused about what is going on and what is to debug.
How do you get such level of debug?

from the error message that states author a lot of times I like you tried disabling content check frontmatter …
finally I disabled ALL templates (theme and yours) by renaming layouts to Xlayouts
then enabling only the author taxonomy template author.terms.html and it did not timeout, but errored out …
debugging usually is done using printf and debug.Dump to see what’s inside an example at then end.
So I checked the templates and disabling the header make it pass check out the header and so forth.
Educated guess: in hugo rendering sequence is non deterministic (one of the programs where it really is) and parallel. Somewhere I’ve seen page.Store and this is only determined after the page is rendered. I guess you try to access the Store before the page is rendered.
so the nested partial header → header/… and so on causes the effect.
with 146+ one can use templates.Currrent to see which layout is currently used, but that might need some layout reorganisation cause 146+ is based on the new template system.
all that said, guess one has to dig in a little deeper and refactor at some point…
Here’s an example commenting the code and only execute dedicated commands.
{{- $lang := ( $.Params.lang | default $.Lang ) -}}
{{$counter := math.Counter }}
{{$page := .Path }}
{{ warnf "%04d PAGE: %s %s " $counter $page $lang }}
{{ range .Data.Terms.Alphabetical }}
{{ warnf "%04d PAGE: %s %s \n%s" $counter $page $lang (debug.Dump .)}}
{{ warnf "%04d PAGE: %s %s -----------------------------------------------------" $counter $page $lang }}
{{end}}
{{/*
{{ partial "header" . }}
{{ partial "header/header" . }}
<div class='container list-container'>
<ul class='list'>
{{ range .Data.Terms.Alphabetical }}
{{ warnf "%04d PAGE: %s %s \n%s" $counter $page $lang (debug.Dump .)}}
{{- $author := ( index $.Site.Data.authors .Name ) -}}
{{- $data := ( or ( index $author $lang ) $author ) -}}
{{- $name := $data.name -}}
<li class='item'>
<h2 class='item-title'>
{{- partial "svg/icons" "author" -}}
<a href='{{ ( print "authors" "/" ( .Name | urlize ) ) | relLangURL }}'>
{{- $name.display -}}
</a>
</h2>
</li>
{{ end }}
</ul>
</div>
{{ partial "footer" . }}
*/}}
p.s. I don’t kjnow how much you customized the theme but it looks a little cluttered with partial generating only partial HTML elements. Could also be refactored to use the baseof/block approach.

When I was working on a template, I noticed that my new translations weren't com… ing through. After some searching around for what I did wrong, I went to the docs and noticed that there are several reserved keys, (`description` in my case).
To be fair, it's on me that I didn't consult the documentation sooner. And I really appreciate the attention to detail that it _can_ be found in the documentation. But it might be nice if there was a warning about this in the CLI output. Perhaps only when `printI18nWarnings` is set.
Would there be interest for this? If so, I can try to see if I can create a PR for this. I imagine it would save people a bit of time, and create awareness that there are reserved keys.
so my first thing now would change the key for authors to something else than id and the language key.
Reserved keys

ok, I’m unsure to understand
should I try a 146+ template with internationalization support and drop the data folder I have for authors?
if that’s so, any suggestion on how to find such template? It looks quite hard to find a template with 146+ support for now.
Should I try a new template from scratch?

no. i would start with the id thing . i’m not sure if it’s that but worth a try. especially as you said it starts after adding that language.
no need to update hugo. might break other things.

With the changes described below the site is rendered and you see , there’s a difference retrieving the author for Indonesian (id) only
ofc you will miss some values and all that the commented widget would have created.
Changes done:
I switched to hugo 123.1 because of your problems with deprecations so I don’t have to change too much in the theme.
I commented all code in these partials by wrapping in {{/* all code here */}}
themes\minimo\layouts\partials\data\author\displayName
themes\minimo\layouts\partials\entry\meta\author.html
these are the ones relying on the type of $data/$author …
