Can I still use hugo server after my site has been deployed?

This seems like a silly question but I can’t find the answer in the docs — if my site is already deployed can I still continue using hugo server in my text editor to view my changes while I’m working locally or do I have to commit and push everything in order to see it?

I think I have an irrational fear that if I run the hugo server command it’s going to down my site for some reason

Absolutely. There is no problem with continuing to use the development server after you have deployed your site. I couldn’t work without it.
