True… cascade is a working solution. I can think of some other solutions that are equally good. I was just wondering if there was a way to target these pages by a file in the layouts folder, as desribed above. I guess this is no longer possible.
Yes, it is.
For your 20 pages in the content root, set the layout field to something like “root” and create layouts/root.html. And no, you don’t have do this for each content file… cascade the value down.
