Are theme fields required for private themes?

I created a theme via hugo new theme <name> and looked at the resulting theme.toml file. Do the required fields also apply to private themes, i.e. does Hugo check these in any way during the build process?

I have no desire to set most of these fields for theme that will never leave private repositories.

The short answer: You only need to provide a theme.toml if you want to submit your theme to the theme site.
